THE SIDELING LOOKOUT

Public BBQ

The drive to this elevated barbecue spot along the A3 is half the adventure, winding mountain roads that'll test your passenger's stomach but reward you with commanding views that stretch clear to Bass Strait on a good day. What strikes you first isn't just the vista, but how thoughtfully designed this place is: a proper covered platform with seating that frames the landscape perfectly, plus spotless toilets that put many highway stops to shame. The elevated position gives you that satisfying sense of having earned your meal, and the resident birds seem to think they've earned a share too, cheeky little beggars will sidle right up to your chair if you're not careful. There's plenty of parking for caravans and enough covered seating to handle a decent crowd, plus those old-school stationary binoculars that actually work. Even on overcast days, this spot delivers, sometimes the moody Tasmanian sky makes the view even more dramatic.
